Don't call me Ishmael - Blogging Task

We have just started a novel study for Reading with students from Year 5-7, reading the book 'Don't call me Ishmael' by Michael Gerard Bauer. This is a special assignment though as we are using OTLS (Online Teaching and Learning System) for the first time for setting tasks for students and students are using the system to submit their tasks. One of the tasks from Part 1 of the Novel study is to discuss a question with the group reading the book - and here's where they will do it!

Discussion Question:

Why do you think Barry Bagsley makes fun of Ishmael's name? Look at Ishmaels suggestions for what he should do about Barry's bullying Pg 43-44. Do you think any of these would work? What would you suggest he do?

Remember to not only repond to the question but also to your fellow classmates comments - You should leave at least 3 comments for this message over 5 days.

Missing you, love Sara

Missing you, Love Sara is written by Jackie French and is a fictional book but has a message about missing children.
WHAT'S THE PLOT SO FAR?
Sara is shocked when she recieves the news her big sister Rennie has gone missing because she was so perfect and nothing bad ever happened to her. Sara is trying to piece together what happened that day from what the police and witnesses have said. The day started off as normal, Rennie left her apartment she shared with Shenae to go to the shops, people saw her walk past the cafe( that's where she normally works but it was her day off) then arrive at the shopping center. But then she disappeared!
Sara has thought of various possiblities such as her getting fed up with her life and running away or killing herself, but that just didn't sound like something she would do because she had a wonderful and happy life.

I would reccomend this book as it is really gripping and hard to put down. So far I would give it an 8 out of 10.

Ghost Child

WHAT BOOK AM I READING?:
The book i'm ready is called 'Ghost Child' by Sonya Hartnett. It is a mature 'young adults' book, but so far, it's very interesting to enjoy and read.

WHO ARE THE CHARACTERS?:
The characters in the book so far are Matilda Victoria Adelaide ('Maddie'. She is from a rich family and is the main character), Matilda's parents; Mother (very snooty and disapproval of Matilda) & Father (the rich 'iron man' who has a rather adventurous soul), Feather (a boy Matilda meets on the beach and whom she madly falls in love with), and the young boy who talks to seventy-year-old Matilda

WHAT IS THE PLOT SO FAR?:
So far, there isn't really a plot. The book has two parts that sometimes confuse me. The part of Matilda as a 70-year-old telling a young boy her life, and then the story part of her youth that she tells. I've read up to the part when she's told her parents that she's in love with a free-cared and poor man called Feather. Her snooty mother disapproves, but her father is willing to give the boy a chance. Matilda's afraid that if Feather agrees to her fathers terms, Feather would be mad at her for taking his freedom. But he says yes; for he is in love with Matilda and will do anything for her.

How Matilda got up in this situation, was the fact that she had finished school. Her father, at dinner, asked her
'What's the most beautifulest thing in the world?' . Matilda doesn't know, so her father took on a trip around the entire globe to show Matilda the world and if that would find her answer. Before hand, she said 'sea eagles'. Now she says that Feather is. Unsure of her life, she thinks she would die without Feather. But there is more to come within the book...

HOW WOULD I RATE THE BOOK?
I am unsure on how i wold rate this book, since i don't know much about it. The one thing that intrigues me to read it is the fabulous and deep description that Sonya has written in the book. It's striking and powerful, but the book is based on a hard romance of uncertainty. So far, out of 10, i would give 'Ghost Child' a 7 or 8 out of 10.

The Hunt For Ned Kelly

WHAT BOOK AM I READING ?

The book I have just finished reading is called " The Hunt For Ned Kelly " by Sophie Masson. She has entwined fiction with the true facts from the Kelly era which has created a fantastic read.

WHO ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS ?

The main characters in this story are Ellen and Jamie Ross. There are many sub-characters that come into the book at different times such as Jamie and Ellen's Uncle Will and Aunt Julia, Mrs Pickett who lets them stay with her while they are away from home, Ned and Dan Kelly along with Steve Hart and Joe Byrne who all use false names to hide their identity and many more through the duration of the book.

WHAT IS THE PLOT SO FAR ?

The main plot of the story is Ellen and Jamie's father dies so they become orphaned. With their father owing alot of money, police come and take all of the siblings possessions except for the little bundles they are allowed to keep. After leaving home they head to Wangaratta where they are meant to be getting jobs but when Ellen tells Jamie the truth they continue on to the town of Beechworth. They stay at Beechworth for a while and after Jamie gets a job at a book store he overhears many conversations involving the notorious Kelly gang who are at large with a price on their heads. When they receive a letter from their uncle saying that their aunt is very ill and has been calling for them they leave all of their new friends in Beechworth and begin travelling back to Melbourne. On the way out of Beechworth the siblings run into a group of 3 horsemen and ask them if they would like a photo taken. After agreeing the 3 men tell Ellen and Jamie that they are Ned and Dan Kelly and Steve Hart. They decide to keep the photo to themselves and continue their journey back to Melbourne. When they have settled in, in Melbourne Jamie gets a job at the AGE and the person who helped him get the job, Sam, gets engaged with Ellen. The story ends with Ned Kelly being caught and trialed then being hung.

HOW WOULD I RATE THIS BOOK ?
I would rate this book 9 and a half out of 10 because it is a very interesting story and it details the fascinating life of the most notorious bushranger of all time, Ned Kelly.

Crime Scene Investigator

I have learnt that people will do anything to get money, they might fake death so the other person involved will receive the life insurance which will be a lot of money. I sort of would like to study crime and criminals later in life because I find the subject really interesting and I like to analyse things which would help in a crime scene. My most interesting crime scene was when 2 people stole a dead body from where it was being held and burnt it then told the police where they had seen a burnt body. This was really surprising when they had done it and then they helped the police to locate it, they must have planned it from the start but in the end they got caught and went to jail for a long time.

Check out some blogs!

Use this link to check out some others schools blogs - some of these students aren't on holiday! What do you think - any you think we should follow?

Shelfari Bookcase

I was thinking that since this is a literature blog we should keep a record of the books we are reading and have read...and what do you know...there is a widget that keeps a record and displays the bookcover called shelfari. If we can't find a better widget I think we should add it - so this is PI's challenge for next week!

I've Lost My Moblie At The Mall

The book i'm reading, that I've read in the past, is called 'I've Lost My Moblie At The Mall' by Wendy Harmer. The book is based on a bit of reality on the reaction of a modern teenager on the 'edge of a techno breakdown'. It sort of makes me laugh at life now.

The main teenager is a girl called Elly (along with Bianca, Tildy & Will, etc) . As based on the title, she lost her mobile at the mall and acts quite frantic. Her best friend, Bianca, has a boyfriend who puts embarrasing pictures of Elly on FaceBook. Elly then becomes very upset and hopes her boyfriend, Will, doesn't see them.
Standing up for her sister, Elly's big sis, Matilda (Tildy), trys to catch an embarrasing photo of Bianca's boyfriend at a friends place for revenge.
But somehting goes wrong with the photo and everyone gets the wrong idea when they see Will in the spa with Tildy's friend, who were ment to get the picture with Bianca's boyfriend!
Elly becomes emotionally heartbroken, but then takes matter into her own hands...and sadly makes everything make sense in the wrong way.
But you'll have to read the book yourself to know what happens next...

This book is suited for mature reads. I rate this book highly and give it the score of 9/10. It's really funny in the way of life of growing teenagers in nowdays. It gives you the no-denying feeling that mainly everything is based on technoligy.

Book Review

The Family Farm
The book I have just started reading is called The Family Farm. It was written by Fiona Palmer and I have read this book in the past but I really enjoyed it so I am reading it again.

Isabelle (Izzy for short) returns to the family farm after quiting her secret job as a farm assistant in NSW, her job is secret because her family think she is working as aNanny for the farm children. She returns back to her family farm hoping her father would let her help around the farm but her father still hasn't changed from her sisters fatal accident.
Izzy's father is very protective of her since her sister, Claire, got killed in a freak farming accident. He didn't want to lose Izzy and would not let her do anything. Izzy's mum tried to convice him to let her work but he just wouldn't listen. Izzy was frustrated because he was letting Will ( Claire's old friend and sort of boyfriend) help out . Will had become close to Izzy's father when Claire died because he understood his pain and shared his secret. Izzy hated Will because he broke Claire's heart just months before she died but little does Izzy know that Will and her father were keeping a HUGE secret from her and Will didn't actually break her heart so she was mad at him for nothing but he put up with it to protect the secret. But all of this changed when her father called up her and her mother up on the two-way telling them there was a fire in the cab of the header. While her mother called the Timmins, the neighbours, whose son was Will. Izzy was the first to reach the fire and saw the header engulfed with flames. She immediately started up the pump and started spraying down the header. Soon the Timmins arrieved and began doing the same, for once she was greatful that Will was here. Then as her father was climbing down he lost grip on the ladder and slipped into the inferno. Will raced into the fire to grab him but he soon disapered aswell. Will had become close to Izzy's father when Claire died because he understood his pain and shared his secret. After what seemed like forever Will emerged holiding Izzy's fathers limp body. His legs were red and blistered and they rushed him back to the house. For once Izzy felt thankful to Will...
I could tell you the rest because I've read it before put then you wouldn't want to read it. But there is a bit of a twist and she leaves the family farm but will she come back????
This book is special because the main character is based on my Aunty and the author has been her close friend since Primary School. I would give this book a 9 out of 10 because I love the storyline and love the descriptive language that makes you feel like you can see what the author is describing.

Crime Scene Investigators

WHAT BOOK AM I READING ?

The book I have just finished reading is called " Crime Scene Investigators " by Allan Zullo. The book is factual with fiction threaded through out to hide real identities as full names are used. Inside the book there are ten different true tales involving criminal activities and crimes. ( Which I love!!! )

WHO ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS ?

There are NO real main characters because with ten tales in one book and each of these only being 20 - 25 pages long it is hard to tell the main characters apart from the non-important characters. Every chapter involves several different main characters.

WHAT IS THE PLOT SO FAR ?

Each of the ten tales have there own plot because each outlines a whole different crime from murders to faked death etc. The plot of the whole book would be that every one of crimes in each tale has happened from some reason or another so police have to work to uncover what really happened to solve the crime.

HOW WOULD I RATE THE BOOK ?

As I enjoy the mystery of any crime and I love to read factual books I would rate this book 8 and a half out of ten because it is so interesting and it describes how police work to find the truth and convict the perpetrator.

Holiday Blogging.......

Hi all ...when I mentioned homework there were a few groans but I hope you enjoy the process at least a little!

Homework for the holidays is to add another post about the book you are reading. It may be a new book or it may be an update on the book from your last post - be thoughtful about your post and remember who your audience is - possibly the whole world!

The other part of your homework is to comment on the posts of your classmates and read back through your post's comments and respond to the comments made. You may end up leaving several comments for the same post as classmates respond to your answers.

Happy blogging - Ms H.

The Ring Of Five

WHAT BOOK AM I READING ?

The book I am reading is called The Ring Of Five by Eoin Mcnamee. The story is a fictional book which involves spies, psychics and many more interesting non-human creatures.

WHO ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS ?

The main characters in the book are Danny who is a person from the upper world ( our normal world ) who is taken to an island in between the upper world and the lower world ( a world full of non-human creatures ) which is called " Wilsons " . He is then taught how to be a spy and it unfolds as if he had been a spy since he was born. Les, a child who has wings and is known as a messenger. He helps Danny settle in to Wilsons and is a good friend of Danny's. Vandra a girl psychic who has vampire like teeth for giving poisons or medicines to people through a bite. She is also very kind to any and is part of their mission later in the story. The final main character is a girl called Dixie. She has the power to disappear and then re-appear in a completely different place. Dixies complexion is alot paler than the usual person and she has a strong friendship with the other 3 main characters.

WHAT IS THE PLOT SO FAR ?
The plot of the story so far is that Danny believes that he is on his way to boarding school but arrives at a mysterious academy. He doesn't know it yet but he is going to embark on a terrifying mission to save his home world. He begins his training to become a spy and along the way he becomes friends with other students who have different worldly talents. Also during his training he has had someone trying to kill him. Further into the story Danny is given a fake letter ( he doesn't know at the time ) stating that his parents have been killed, and so he leaves the academy to join with a group of evil called " The Ring Of Five ". The group are trying to come together to attempt to wipe out the normal human race. With his looks, Danny is accepted into the ring because he is thought to be the missing link. This is because he has the looks of two races of people. This is as far as I have read but I can't wait to read more of this incredible book.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE BOOK ?
I would rate this book for the amount I've read a 9 out of a possible 10. This is because it is very intriguing to read, it catches and holds your attention which I love.

Joel and Cat Set the Story Straight

WHAT BOOK AM I READING?
The book I'm reading at the moment is called 'Joel and Cat Set the Story Straight' by Nick Earls and Rebecca Sparrow. It is a book published in 2007 and is suited for mature reads.
WHO ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS?
The main characters are Cat Davis and Joel Hedges, followed by Cat's little brother Max, Cat's parents, Joel's mum, Jorge and Betty.
WHAT IS THE PLOT SO FAR?
So far, Cat and Joel are known to hate each other and surprisingly they are involved in a tandem story together. Cat's mother has just left the house and Joel's mother is hanging around with a guy called Jorge. In the book with pages to come, it says that Cat's father and Joel's mother start dating each other. Very bad development since Cat and Joel hate each other deeply.
HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE BOOK?
The book is in parts eg, Joel starts to say about his opinion and tell a story, next Cat does her story and her opinion, etc, etc. I strongly agree that this book is suited for mature reads, but Cat's side of the story is more interesting than Joel's. I (so far) rate this book 6-7 out of 10.

Poisonous Inspiration

Pretty Little Mistakes

What book am I reading?
I'm reading a book called Pretty Little Mistakes. This book is an interesting one because you are the chararter and at the end of each page you are given two choices and when you choose one it's like making a choice in your life. This book has one beginning and 150 different endings but I've been choosing the wrong ones and have ended up dying 4 times. The thing I like about Pretty Little Mistakes is that each choice leads onto a different storyline and if you make a mistake you can go back and change your choice, unlike real life. I would rate this book so far an 9 out of 10 because it holds my attention and I can't wait to discover the other endings.

Well this is the first Post on the Hyden Primary Literary Circle and its all pretty exciting. This post is a big welcome to Year 7’s Trent, Ivy and Taylah who will be learning all about blogging and creating their own blog this year. We are all going to write about the books we are reading and hopefully make contacts with students from other schools and find out what they are reading. It should be a lot of fun! We will join some blog circles and do a few challenges while we learn about web safety and down the track peer teach our friends about blogging.
